Ruthlessly milking opportunities to grab profits and market share – that’s his style. Simpson was commissioned by Murdoch owned Harper Collins to write a book where Simpson would ‘confess’ to how he would have hypothetically murdered his wife. Murdoch-owned Fox Networks was to air an ‘exclusive’ interview of the same & Murdoch-owned newspaper Herald Sun was slated to run the same story. However following a huge public outcry, Murdoch dropped the idea. Speaking on the occasion, Anand Mahindra, VC & MD said, “We believe the Stokes acquisition demonstrates our commitment to build a world class business that serves its global customers and enhances value for M&M’s stakeholders.” As far as farm equipment are concerned, the company has several joint ventures in European, American and Asian countries. M&M makes and sells tractors in Latin America and China. Apart from the automotive and related services, the company has also fortified its presence in real estate and financial services. But, such diversity in business has been more of a pain for Mahindra rather then a successful business strategy. The problem now faced by the company is that it is trying to change too fast in a very little time. This means that a company which is still recognized as an automotive driven group is not giving itself enough time for the transition. The information technology and the real estate are good sectors to enter at this moment in time, but core competency is also an important consideration.

To read more IIPM Publication Article, please click here..., please also visit: IIPM Publications, Arindam Chaudhuri Initiative, Business & Economy

Source: IIPM, 4Ps, B&E

We are working on Bollywood-Mobile chat channels...

But as per a release by Dharma Productions in August, in the first week itself, the film claims to have recorded collections of GBP 1.14 million (Rs.97.7 million) in the UK, $1.76 million (Rs.80.59 million) in the US and $0.26 million (Rs.11.9 million) in Australia. On the back of over a thousand prints, the film grossed close to Rs.400 million in the first two weeks, but collections dropped tremendously afterwards, proving clearly audiences’ preferences. On another front, a key contributor to ROI are the distribution rights to be sold. Apart from just the prints, producers make significant amounts of money by selling off distribution rights for mobile phone content (ringtones, call back tunes, screensavers, games, wallpapers, movie scenes, et al), premieres on cable TV and radio. The nation’s mania clearly has moved beyond the screensavers and ringtones; now movie based games, clippings, videos et al are the rage. And more is still to come. “We are working on Bollywood-Mobile chat channels, where people can chat with their favourite celebrities through their mobile phones by paying a small sum,” informs Rajiv Hiranandani, Country Head – India, Mobile2win (a wireless solutions provider). There is something about money that makes the world go round. Your pay cheque, bonus, annual increment, stock option and other incentives, all revolve around money. The exotic holidays that you share with your family, the exquisite gift s that you buy for them, the swanky car that you vroom around in... everything! Of course, there’s that school of thought that money can’t buy everything. Yet, along with religion and sex, money is perhaps that something that humanity has always coveted, fought for, despaired over and even killed for. In a modern society, no matter what distorted, perverted or adapted brand of capitalism or socialism it practices, money matters! In any modern society, those are entrepreneurs and corporations that can be said to be the fountainheads of money. Adam Smith recognized this over 200 years ago, when he published The Wealth of Nations. Hundreds of economists, thinkers and philosophers have since explained how profits generated by entrepreneurs and corporations have transformed modern societies. Sure, the government in any modern nation state is perhaps the biggest employer so far. And today, when the net CDMA subscriber base has just touched 30.75 million, the GSM herd has touched 86.62 million (August 2006) mark, which effectively means that the number of mobile users using the CDMA technology is just a heartbreaking 26.2%! Looking at the contemporary situation: Net cellular subscriber additions during July 2006 were 5.2 million, while the number of new CDMA users was just 1 million – symbolizing just 19% of total additions! No doubt, CDMA is considered the future of rural connectivity, given its cost efficiency. But what about now; what does Anil Ambani do to ensure the longevity of his telecom fraternity? He decides to apply for permission to provide GSM services in 21 circles out of the total 23 in the country. Easier said than done! Policy-makers have, in turn, asked him to withdraw from providing CDMA services in some circles due to a ‘spectrum crunch’.

For complete IIPM Research & Publication Article, please click here...

Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

Source: IIPM Publication and Business & Economy

Some other IIPM Editorial Articles:

A few weeks of war & an eternity of hatred

Anil Dhirubhai Group

Recently, a group of senior lawyers and business executives ...

Growth in motorcycle market

The Cost of Capital: An International Comparison

Are Indians finally rich?

The chameleon changes its colour again

Iraq war kills one more…politically

Don't walk out of your home

Superman Returns

Ethiopia-Eritrea Boundary Commissions (EEBC)

Wal-Mart’s International Growth

The average rent per day in five star hotels in the city towered to as much as Rs.11,000...

Justice Jackson’s eloquent words at Nuremberg...

Reservoirs of Lucre

Toyota was a change agent

Rags’ to Riches

Shock-absorber clauses... The second alternative involves the use of a number of types of contractual tools. “Shock-absorber clauses” are designed to facilitate low-cost, amicable renegotiation. “Safety-net clauses” satisfy the need for security and provide protections in the event that renegotiations fail. Versions of both appear in many traditional business contracts – although they have not previously been sorted into these categories – and could be combined in contracts that are threatened by political instability. Shock-absorber clauses take various forms in the business world. In construction contracts, change clauses allow the customer to make unilateral adjustments to the agreement during a project and let the contractor recover costs associated with those changes. The customer benefits because construction continues even when disputes arise.

For complete IIPM Research & Publication Article, please click here...

Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

Source: IIPM Publication

Other IIPM Editorials:

Obsolescing Bargain

Recently, a group of senior lawyers and business executives ...

When colossal ambitions turn into pipe dreams...

Cadbury: Kuch Meetha Ho Jaye

Sydney Opera House

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blog-trendsetter.blogspot.com/2006/09/shock-absorber-clauses-iipm-be-article.html' title='Shock-absorber clauses... This has made the country a destination and a transit route for opiates originating around it. Consequently, the streets are in a mess. Families are under increasing stress as they admit more and more children into rehab centres. What’s our narcotics policy? Can it work? What if it doesn’t?

It seems everybody is on something these days. When they want to go to the movies zonked, when there’s an exam to pass, when they want to immerse their father’s ashes (read Rahul Mahajan) or when they simply want to survive the day. It’s almost like the line from Psych-Out, a 1968 movie about a girl who goes to San Francisco looking for her acidfreaked brother played by Bruce Dern. What sets her out is a cryptic letter Dern writes, “God is alive and well and living in a sugar cube.” Cut to the India of 2006, a truckload of Mandrax is stumbled onto in a Delhi warehouse and 200 kilos of Cocaine are busted in Mumbai. Then there are of course the smaller every day seizures. What’s going on? Is word from the streets reaching the government? Do they have a clue on what to do? New estimates of the United Nations Office on Drugs & Crime (UNODC) say that increased opium production in Afghanistan has led to over 5,000 kilos of Heroin already being processed this year, up from 4,100 kilos in the whole of 2005. “One kilo of Heroin can last 10,000 shots. It said, “The Middle- East on the Eve of Modernity P. 5.” I thought: What a perfect way to describe the Middle-East today – going back to some pre-modern era? Alas, The Syria Times was not trying to be ironic. It turned out the headline was the title of a book about Aleppo in the 18th century. But had it been a news headline, it would have been apt. Condoleezza Rice must have been severely jet-lagged when she said that what's going on in Lebanon and Iraq today were the “birth pangs of a new Middle-East.” Oh, I wish it were so. What we are actually seeing are the rebirth pangs of the old Middle-East, only fuelled now by oil and more destructive weaponry. Some of the most primordial, tribal passions, which always lurk beneath the surface here – Sunnis versus Shiites, Jews versus Muslims, Lebanese versus Syrians – but are usually contained by modern states or bonds of civilization, are exploding to the top.

For complete IIPM Editorial Article, please click here...

Source: IIPM Publication, Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blog-trendsetter.blogspot.com/2006/08/new-middle-east-surely-you-were-born.html' title='New Middle-East? While Saudi Arabia is an excellent partner in both trade and foreign policy from the Arab world, India has also contributed significantly to the economic and industrial growth of the Saudi Arabian community. For instance, take the presence of 1.3 million Indians (Saudi Arabia’s total population of 23 million), the largest number of people from any single foreign country. India is the fourth largest market for Saudi Arabian goods, accounting for 5.95% of its global exports. Total exports to India stood at $1.16 billion in 2005-06 (April to December). Indian exports amounted $1.31 billion for 2005-06 (April to December), contributing 2.9% to the total imports of Saudi Arabia. Major items of export for India were food grains like basmati & non-basmati rice, copper, clothing & apparel and nuclear reactors, while minerals and petroleum were the major imports. The focus of economic and commercial relationships between the two countries is continuously drifting towards non-oil sectors like services, as both countries have started to view the economic capabilities of each other in a new light. This has become possible due to the rise of strategic commitments between companies of both countries. Investments, joint ventures, project and technology transfers have grown substantially over the past two decades, prompting many Indian companies to setup operations in Saudi Arabia.

For complete IIPM Editorial Article, please click here...

Source: IIPM Publication, Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

The tragedy of illiterate arguments

If only Indian politicians could learn the real solution to stop attacks...

If the July 11 serial bomb blasts that killed over 180 people in Mumbai were any less hurting, the politicisation of the tragedy was like rubbing salt on wounds of Mumbaikars The current round of sabre rattling by Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, over the extremist violence, and by the ruling alliance over Modi’s Mumbai visit, demonstrates a thorough lack of coherent thinking in the political class. The public meeting organised in Mumbai’s Shanmukhanand auditorium to condole the death of innocent commuters on the fateful day was used by Modi to score political points over Prime Minister Man-mohan Singh. He accused him of compromising on the issue of fighting terrorism. “You have to decide whether your future is safe with this government,” Modi warned the audience, underscoring the real purpose of the visit. He even launched a personal attack on the PM, denigrating him using a comparison with Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel, nicknamed Iron Man for his handling of insurgency in the country post-independence. “Ek woh sardar the, ek yeh sardar hain,” squelched Modi. He also raked his Musharraf rhetoric to refurbish his anti-Pak credentials & to show he would tread the path which the government didn’t dare. If only terrorist attacks could be countered with mere jingoism. Yet, he wasn’t the only one playing politics. The ruling Congress and the Samajwadi Party were no different. While the Home Minister, R. R. Patil, warned in State Assembly that “any objectionable statements” by Modi would invite legal action, SP General Secretary Amar Singh raked up Gujarat Chief Minister’s “communal credentials” as a reason for opposing his visit. For a change, L. K. Advani’s statement condemning the attack and asking politicians to stand together (which clearly went against the BJP’s offi cial release against the government) was a most pleasant and welcome surprise. It is most unfortunate that instead of forcing the government to provide literacy & employment to the masses – a sure shot solution for curbing such attacks at the roots themselves – politicians are still busy consolidating their media presence. Sigh, if only we could ever learn...

For complete IIPM Editorial Article, please click here...

Source: IIPM Publication, Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

IIPM Publication :: ‘Rags’ to Riches

“Both for long and short term strategy of export, India should go for high value added products like embroidery and fabrics,” strategically comments Vivek Hinduja, CEO Marketing, of Bangalore based Gokaldas Exports, which has been the top supplier to international pret-a-porter retail giants like Tommy Hilfiger, Adidas and Nike. Supportingly reasons Hemendra Rawat, Sales & Marketing, Raymond Ltd, “Compared to China, the global perception of India is of a relatively low volume producer, and perhaps of even already being a high value manufacturer, what with premium fashion retailers already sourcing exclusively through Indian manufacturers.” Not a hollow boast from Raymond, when one sees their buyers’ list of exclusive high-end fashion brands like Zara, Levis and Gap. Even the epicentre of fashion, Italy, relies immensely on indigenous Indian fibre garments. This is echoed by Italian designer Nello Marelli of Eurojersey S.p.A, “India produces the best man made fibre and other extremely valued fabrics like Lycra.” This is palpable in India’s export of manmade fibre worth $57 million to Italy from April 1, 2005-January 1, 2006, revealed in the annual report of the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI).

For more on IIPM Editorial Article, click here...

Source: IIPM (Business& Economy), Editor: Arindam Chaudhuri

IIPM Editorial : The National Security strategy of September 2002

“In a world full of perceived potential threats, the risk to the global order and the norm of non-intervention on which it continues to be based is simply too great for the legality of unilateral preventive action, as distinct from collectively endorsed action, to be accepted. Allowing one to so act is to allow all.” The National Security strategy of September 2002, just largely reiterated in March, grants the United States the right to carry out what it calls “pre-emptive war,” which means not pre-emptive, but “preventive war.” That’s the right to commit aggression – plain and simple. In the wording of the Nuremberg Tribunal, aggression is “the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole” – all the evil in the tortured land of Iraq that flowed from the direct invasion by United States and United Kingdom, for example. The concept of aggression was defined clearly enough by US Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson, who was the chief prosecutor for the United States at Nuremberg.

For complete IIPM Publication Article, please click here...

Source: IIPM Editorial

Fed turns sweet 16 for short-term (IIPM Publication)

It was the second jitter from the new Fed chairman Ben Bernanke; since he replaced Alan Greenspan on February 1, 2006. These critics are nostalgic for a time that never was. Yes, Wal-Mart has meant the end of many local stores, and yes, at some of them, customers might have been greeted by name when they walked in the door. But it was these same customers who chose to shop at Wal-Mart when it came to town, because low prices apparently meant more to their quality of life than a wave and a smile.

For complete IIPM Editorial article, please click here...

Source: IIPM - Business & Economy

Oracle continues to prove that Linux can handle the world’s toughest workloads (IIPM Editorial)

“More and more customers are turning to Linux to support their large-scale enterprises,” said Richard Sarwal, vice president of Server Performance of Oracle Corp. “By showing outstanding Linux database performance on the largest SMPs, Oracle continues to prove that Linux can handle the world’s toughest workloads.” For long, Oracle has been making plans to make ‘open source’ a part of its key strategy, and Oracle had shown interest enough to acquire open source companies when it wanted to acquire JBoss.

For complete article, please click here...

Source: IIPM Publication

The ‘G’earing ‘M’ove under Wipro’s roof

The relationship between automobile behemoth GM and IT giant Wipro, revived in shape of a $300 million deal bagged by Wipro for the next five years. Those who take these pills for 30 or more times in a month, have 25% more mortality than those who do not. Sleeping pills are injurious, no matter the potency. A supporting estimate shows that the current number of sleeping pills manufactured has crossed documented prescription amounts by 700%. But obviously, there are many individuals who are purchasing sleeping pills without prescription. It is appalling that new advertisements of certain manufacturers promise to ‘take children into dreamland’. Irresponsible doctors and negligent parents seem to be deliberately offering this sweet poison to children. The race for development is acting as a breeding ground for unhealthy lifestyle and suicidal practices. Over and above all, the indifferent attitude of the American government towards its future is highly reprehensible. America spent $2.1 billion on sleeping pills in the year 2004, which may be a small amount for a superpower like the US, but is a heavy price for the thousands of innocent lives that are blissfully ignorant. Many politicians have found it difficult to recover from such reverses. Yet, whether it is an electoral humiliation handed out by angry voters or a judicial reprimand, Kamal Nath has always ensured that he bounces back into reckoning, without losing his political clout or power. Perhaps sobered by that verdict, Nath seems to have steered clear of any controversial action in his current stint. At least so far. More Info...

Source: IIPM - Business & Economy

Nepal & Sri Lankan Army

There is just no way that the Nepal army can decisively defeat the Maoists, just as there is no way the Sri Lankan army can defeat the Tamil insurgents. This year saw Arvind Mills move its garment operations from single shift to double shift. “This would increase the installed capacity of our company from around 13 million pieces to about 20 million pieces per annum,” confirmed Arvind Lalbhai. There would be a capacity addition of 1.5 million pieces per annum in the shirts facility. A new denim dyeing and processing plant is being put up, which would augment the total capacity to 120 million metres per annum.
